This lesson helps students define caring and compassion, recognize stereotypes and their misunderstandings, and explore shared commonalities with others.
FORGIVENESS
This lesson helps students define forgiveness in both personal and societal contexts, while exploring how forgiveness can positively impact individuals and communities.
TEAM
This lesson guides students to define "team," identify examples of a good team member, discuss strategies for overcoming team challenges, and reflect on their own experiences working in groups.
CARPE DIEM
This lesson encourages students to analyze quotes on "seizing the day," identify personal obstacles, explore how Welles Crowther overcame challenges, and create their own philosophy for overcoming obstacles.
THE POWER OF ONE
This lesson explores the "power of one," prompting students to reflect on its relevance, journal on how compassion influenced Welles Crowther, and recognize others who made an impact.
LEAD WRITERS
VERNOY PAOLINI
Project Manager/Elementary School
Paolini is the Project Manager of the Red Bandanna Project, bringing over 37 years of teaching experience in Vernon Township, NJ with an A.A. degree and a Master of Arts. A dedicated advocate for education and diversity, she served as Past President of the Diversity Council at Kean University and Vice President of the Council of Holocaust Educators. Paolini has contributed to curriculum development for the NJ curriculum on 9/11 and Terrorism, as well as for the September 11th Memorial and Museum. She is also a co-author of study guides for The Devil Came on Horseback and The Hidden Child documentaries.
KAREN HINKES LEVINE
Lead Writer/Middle School
Levine taught Social Studies for 39 years in the Parsippany-Troy Hills school district, holding an A.A. degree and a Master of Arts. As Lead Teacher of Social Studies, she contributed to the development of the NJ Holocaust Curriculum and the NJ Curriculum on 9/11 and Terrorism. Levine was also a Regional Education Corps member for the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum. She co-authored study guides for the documentaries The Devil Came on Horseback and The Hidden Child.
HELEN M. SIMPKINS
Lead Writer/High School
Simpkins taught for 35 years in Vernon Township, NJ, holding an A.A. degree and two Master of Arts degrees. She served as a Social Studies teacher, World Languages educator, and coordinator of the School-Wide Enrichment Program. As an associate for the NJ Commission on Holocaust Education, she contributed to curriculum development for both the NJ Holocaust Commission and the NJ curriculum on 9/11 and Terrorism. She also helped create curriculum for the September 11th Memorial and Museum. Simpkins co-authored study guides for The Devil Came on Horseback and The Hidden Child documentaries.
PHILIP A. TINTLE
Lead Writer/Sports Teams
Tintle has over 30 years of experience in education in Vernon Township, NJ. He taught History and Psychology for 26 years and served as the K-12 Supervisor of Social Studies and World Languages. He holds a BA from Montclair State University, a Master of Arts from East Stroudsburg University, and a Supervisor Certificate from Seton Hall University. Tintle was a curriculum writer for the Social Studies department in Vernon and taught a Holocaust and Tolerance course for 8 years. He also coached football, basketball, baseball, and Track & Field at various grade levels for 25 years, including coaching his three sons. Additionally, he coached at West Point Military Academy’s Summer Basketball Camp for 3 years.
CHARLES R. MAZE
Lead Writer Camps/Youth Programs
Maze holds an A.B. in Sociology from Brown University and an M.S. in Park and Recreation Administration. A former varsity football and wrestling athlete, he is currently the President and CEO of the Rockland County YMCA in Nyack, NY. He serves as a board member of the New York State YMCA Foundation and is President of the Rotary Club of Nyack. Maze is also a member of the Rockland County Sports Hall of Fame board and District Coordinator/Advisor for YMCA Youth and Government. He actively participates at Stephen’s Church as a lector and on the Finance/Outreach Committee.
ALISON R. CROWTHER
Lead Writer/Administration
Alison Crowther is the mother of Welles Remy Crowther, “The Man in the Red Bandanna.” She holds a B.A. in Biology from Wheaton College, Norton, MA, and worked as a Research Assistant to Vincent P. Dole, MD, at The Rockefeller University in New York. Crowther has had a diverse career, serving as a Recruiter, Trainer, and District Sales Leader with Doncaster, and as VP of Sales at Holbrook Cottage, where she developed training materials for the Direct Sales division. She was also the Director of Public Relations and Event Planner for Kozlov Dance International. A dedicated community leader, Crowther is a Sustainer and Past President of Sustainers for The Junior League of Westchester-on-Hudson, NY, and serves as a Trustee for The Welles Remy Crowther Charitable Trust.
